The Difference You Make, in Their Words

As this year’s graduating class prepares to take the next step in their careers, we asked them to look back on their time with the ICAS Foundation.
We wanted to know what had made the biggest difference.
Of course, the bursary mattered. But it wasn’t the first thing most graduates talked about. They spoke about their mentors, the encouragement they received, the opportunities they were introduced to and the confidence they gained along the way.
For those who support the Foundation as mentors, donors, volunteers and partners, these reflections are a reminder of the lasting impact that support can have.
“The mentorship was the most invaluable part of the whole programme and is a major part of the reason I am where I am today.” - Dawood
For many graduates, having an experienced professional in their corner was transformative. Mentors provided practical advice, industry insight and career guidance, but they also offered reassurance, perspective and someone to turn to throughout university.
“The support from a professional in the industry has been really useful, in terms of networking and maximising opportunities, but also as a kind person to talk to.” - Alyssa
“The advice from my mentor has been invaluable in both my academic work and graduate job applications.” - Sophia
Graduates also reflected on the difference the bursary itself had made. By easing financial pressure, it gave many the freedom to focus on their studies, reduce part-time working hours and make the most of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom.
“The ICAS Foundation has been invaluable. It has allowed me to be free from financial stress during my studies, as well as constant support from my mentoring relationship.” - Leah
“The ICAS Foundation programme significantly helped me financially but also gave me the opportunity to gain industry-specific knowledge from my mentor.” - Claudia
For others, the biggest change was less tangible but just as important. The Foundation helped them see that they belonged in the profession and gave them the confidence to pursue opportunities they might once have thought were beyond their reach.
“Growing up on a council estate and facing economic disadvantage can make anyone believe they are not worthy of a professional career in accounting and finance. The ICAS Foundation programme shows students like me that we are worthy and deserving of those opportunities.” - Aaron
Today, the Foundation has supported 219 alumni, with almost 90% achieving a First or Upper Second Class degree. Around three quarters have progressed directly into employment or professional training, almost half have entered ICAS training, and 22 alumni now volunteer as Foundation Ambassadors, helping inspire the next generation.
Every student’s journey is different, but the message from this year’s graduates is remarkably consistent. Success isn’t built on financial support alone. It’s built on encouragement, opportunity, guidance and the belief that talent should never be limited by background.
To everyone who gives their time, expertise or financial support to the ICAS Foundation: thank you. The difference you make extends far beyond graduation.
Help create the next success story
Every graduate’s journey starts with someone choosing to invest in their potential. If you’d like to help open doors for the next generation of students, we’d be grateful for your support.
